Negative Aspects of Cosmetic Surgery Essay -- essays research papers
Cosmetic Surgery - Worth the Risk? In today's society the picture of beauty is a thin super model with the body of a goddess posted on billboards all around the world. Children grow up playing with Barbie dolls with the body measurements of would be 90,60,90. Because of these pictures and other figures of beauties projected all over, a person is convinced to believe that to be beautiful and happy, one must look like these images. To most, the easiest way to achieve this is my having cosmetic surgery performed. With the change of times, has also come the advancement of medical procedures, yet how safe can a person be who is having cosmetic surgery performed on their body. No matter how good the technological advancements, there is always the risk of not only the surgery resulting being unwanted but in some cases even death. Society today has brain washed not only today's women, but also the men to believe that in order for a person to look beautiful they must look like the images seen on television, in movies and on the cover of magazines. These images portray grotesquely thin women and muscular men with the famous six-pack abs. The Hollywood figures that are so famous for their looks and bodies also encourage the belief that thin is beautiful. These images are plastered all over billboards, television shows and commercials and magazine advertisements. With all these visions of beauty seen everywhere in a person's every day life, a person feels compelled to look just like those images. Busy lifestyles of many people keep most of exercising daily in order to receive the fit and trim bodies to look beautiful. This then leads many to resort to cosmetic surgery. However, this can be a dangerous choice. Many fatalities have been... ...ons of tomorrow will also be more likely to have more problems as a result of low self-esteem and poor body image. We should not only cut back on the use of cosmetic surgery for safety reasons but also because it is destroying the simple beauty of a person being who they are. The American society will change its view of people in the years to come. Generations to come will grow up feeling that they are being judged on not who they are as a person, but how they look. If they don't look like the super model they have come to believe as perfect beauty, then they will not believe in themselves, causing psychological problems. People considering plastic surgery should be informed of all the risks. They should not be concerned with trying to live up to society's standards and by the price of the operations. They should most be concerned with the real price, their lives.

The Contemporary International System
The Contemporary International System The structure of the contemporary international system involves many different factors that influence how the world operates today. The international system is defined as the study of the interactions among the various actors that participate in international politics, including states, international organizations, nongovernmental organizations, sub-national entities, and individuals. The study of international relations aims to evaluate how countries interact within the political and social international system.Factors such as, technological change, shifts of national power and various changes in the environment influence todayââ¬â¢s system and how we live on a day-to-day basis. History is another factor that must be recognized in the shaping of the world system. Events that occurred in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have a great impact today, as we are able to make future projections based on historical trends. The operation and stru cture of the international system involves various social and political factors that shape the world we live in today. The shaping of the contemporary system was achieved through the concept of globalization. This idea is often referred to as the ââ¬Å"shrinkage of the worldâ⬠and has been made possible through the advancement in modern technology. Globalization is the process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through an international network of political ideas. Today, a nationââ¬â¢s technological capability is the main indicator of its power. Technology directly affects a nationââ¬â¢s economic growth though innovation. This growth then allows that country to produce military weapons for protection and could potentially throw off the balance of power between states. Technology and innovation can also determine a nationââ¬â¢s trade capacity, which can limit the amount a country can import and export. A nation with great trade cap abilities will experience international financial flows into their country, thus stimulating economic growth. Technology provides a framework for both the relative and absolute power between states and greatly impacts the structure of the international system. For example, if we evaluate the correlation of power and technology throughout history, we see that the United States and Germany experienced dramatic changes in their global position following the second industrial revolution, just as Great Britain had following the first industrial revolution. These powers have since failed to maintain their place at the forefront of technological innovation, and have faded from the international scene. Countries like Japan have been very technologically advanced for the last 50 years and have moved to the forefront of the international scene. The global scene that was once dominated by the United States, may have a new power due to Japanââ¬â¢s vast technological and innovative capabilities . Businesses have also globalized, as they are now able to interact with companies overseas with the click of a button. Since travel has become ââ¬Å"easyâ⬠businesses are now able to meet face to face with their international partners on a regular basis. There are proper customs that people must follow when engaging in foreign business practices. For example, the exchange of business cards is a formal practice in countries like China and Japan.Foreign business associates may see it as a sign of disrespect if one is not educated on the proper customs of that country. The structure and operation of the international system is also influenced by the behaviors of the actors within that system. For centuries, the idea of the ââ¬Å"stateâ⬠was centered upon the idea of inclusion and exclusion. This idea became the centerpiece of national politics for centuries and is a major reason for conflicts within the system. After the French Revolution these states were formed on the th ree ideologies of realism, liberalism, and idealism.Karen Mingst and Jack Snyder define these ideologies and explain the assumptions behind the weaknesses that lead to misguided policies. Realism instills an appreciation of the role of power but warns that states will suffer if they overreach. The cooperation among states is a way to maximize each individual stateââ¬â¢s security and often calls for ââ¬Å"backingâ⬠during times of conflict. World War II resembles a realist idea as each state was drawn to fight to maximize its own security. Liberalism identifies the potential for democracies, but also notes that democracies can lead to tyrannies and the threat of a violent collapse. This arose after World War I in response to the inability to control and limit war within the international system. Lastly, Idealism stresses that a stateââ¬â¢s values must reinforce any stable political order but recognizes that there is also a potential for conflict. Together these three persp ectives form the core of the contemporary international system. In order to fully understand the contemporary international system, we must first understand the historical trends in the state and international system.International Relations can be traced back to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 where the modern state system was developed. This instituted the concept of sovereignty, which is defined as absolute and perpetual power invested in a commonwealth. This power does not exist in an individual, but in a state. In this, the leaders are limited by divine law and are ââ¬Å"subject to the laws of God and nature. â⬠This belief is still held today and believers attribute the legitimacy of the state to the consent of the people. After all, the ââ¬Å"peopleâ⬠are the fundamental the source of all political power. In conclusion, the contemporary international system was shaped on the basis of globalization, the behaviors of the actors within the international system, and the evaluation of historical patterns. The world is constantly changing and evolving toward a more connected population. The widespread use of social media and continued advances in technology allow the population to connect with each other as if they were sitting in the same room. As we move toward this new era, we must identify these historical patterns in order to further improve our future international relations.

Same Sex Marriages Should Be Legal - 2823 Words
The broader debate about whether same-sex marriages should be given legal recognition in Australia has been on for several years due to the conflicts between various groups regarding its legalisation. Although over 72% Australians support marriage equality, there are still about 14% who strongly oppose the same-sex institution of marriage (Same- sex marriage research, 2014). Various factors are accountable in influencing attitudes towards same-sex marriage, including, religious orientation (Olson, Cadge, Harrison, 2006; Walls, 2010), right-wing authoritarianism and masculinity. Understanding the differing attitudes of people towards homosexuals is crucial to not only reduce sexual prejudice, but also to gain a better insight towards same-sex marriage to close the discrimination gap between heterosexual couples and homosexual couples. We propose that the differing attitudes towards same-sex marriages can be understood in terms of intergroup conflicts or conflicting views between grou ps ââ¬â support and opposition towards same- sex marriages (Herek, 2004). Shared opinions provide the psychological basis for intergroup conflicts (Bluic, McGarty, Thomas, Lala, Berdsen, Misajon, 2015). These can help understand differing attitudes that are formed towards gay and lesbian individuals (Herek, 2004). Inter group opinions help define identity, and what certain individuals stand for and against. Furthermore, these identities form a platform for collective action (Bluic et al. 2015).Show MoreRelatedSame Sex Marriage Should Be Legal1288 Words à |à 6 Pages Marriage is not precisely the same as it used to be interpreted. Whoever said life was going to be easy, the sooner everyone learns that the better off they will be. Life in itself is very stressful, but when you throw in being a wife, mother, student and employee itââ¬â¢s almost too much to bear. In order to deal with everything I must do I have a calendar with everything on it and how much time needs to be spent. We will write a custom essay sample on Prewriting for the Process Analysis Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now Now, where should I begin? Iââ¬â¢m a wife and therefore I must make sure my husband has clean work clothes and food for work. We all know how men donââ¬â¢t like to do their own laundry or cook. At least my husband doesnââ¬â¢t like to. Donââ¬â¢t get me started on trying to keep my house clean with him and my animals, itââ¬â¢s like a tornado hits this place just about every other day. Dirty dishes, clothes, cat toys, food, cat litter anything you can just about think of. I also feed and clean up after the animals; I have five cats inside, two chameleons, and a cat outside. I must wake up every morning at 7 AM to feed them. Iââ¬â¢m their mother now so they all depend on me. If all that is not enough I must also work for a living. I clean a local movie theater in my town. Iââ¬â¢ll tell you right now, if everything I deal with at home isnââ¬â¢t stressful enough when I get to work and walk through those doors the stress slaps me in the face. I just donââ¬â¢t understand how people can be so nasty. The restrooms are another story, they are so gross. I have never realized how dirty and inconsiderate people really are and that makes my life stressful when I have to pick up after all them. With all that being said I how could I possibly find any time to do my school work but I always seem to do it. Itââ¬â¢s very hard to do daily things then try and set down to do homework, especially the section Iââ¬â¢m doing now with writing. I get so stressed out because I get very aggravated when I try and write because Iââ¬â¢m not good at it. It seems to take me forever to get it done and that makes me just want to throw the pen and paper down and quit. But I seem to figure out a way to get it done and not go insane in the process. Iââ¬â¢m not totally sure if there is a solid way to cope with stress but there are many ways to try and manage it. When life seems to get too stressful or even out of control I will go outside and walk around while taking in fresh air to try and clear my head. I have picked up a nasty little habit a long time ago, I know itââ¬â¢s not good and I need to quit but itââ¬â¢s hard and it seems to really help in stressful times and of course this is none other than smoking. I guess itââ¬â¢s really just a matter of what kind of stress and how bad it is. Sometimes I turn everything off and turn on the radio and just lie on the bed and listen to the music. Sometimes if itââ¬â¢s just bad enough I will end up crying and yes it sounds like a child but is seems to unleash the stress and wash it away as if its water in a bath tub when the plug gets taken out. Regardless of the situation I pull myself together before it gets out of hand. So many responsibilities every day is a bit tough, but there is always a way to do everything. The way I get everything done is just having a plan for each specific thing . Whoever said life was going to be easy, the sooner everyone learns that the better off they will be. First thing, I must take care of my family/home life. There are a lot of things that must be done when it comes to my home responsibilities. I must make sure my house is nice and clean, we all know itââ¬â¢s not very pleasant living in a dirty home. With that I have to wash dishes, clean the bathrooms and put things away. Make sure everything is put up in the right places, make all beds up and vacuum all floors then sweep and mop. I got to gather all dirty clothes and get them done then there is the outside to deal with. I always make sure the outside of my house is nice and neat, I donââ¬â¢t like to have my house looking like a bunch of wild animals live here. I keep my yard mowed; everything put up and kept in order. We burn wood so I make sure there is wood cut and split and stacked up out at the tree and I make sure to wood stack is neat and stacked well and covered up away from the weather. Next I must tend to my children that are the kind of non-human kind. Thatââ¬â¢s a whole task in itself; I believe that itââ¬â¢s probably harder than dealing with human children. They make things very stressful; they meow over and over like itââ¬â¢s going out of style. I got to feed them and when that time comes you better make sure you watch out cause they all come running through the house all at once because they know what time it is and if youââ¬â¢re in their path they will knock you over like a pack of hungry wolves. I got to make sure their bathroom is clean and make sure the cats outside are feed and taken care of to. Then I have to turn my attention to my chameleons, I have to make sure they have water because they donââ¬â¢t drink water out of a dish so I have to do it out of a spray bottle or they will die. I have to make sure they got bugs in their cages so they can eat. I have a lot of things to do on a daily basis, it get tough and very stressful so I have to make sure I plan everything down to the last thing because I would never have the time to do everything. I have a small window of time after I take care of my animals to do some school work so I try and buckle down and do as much as possible. Sometimes the lessons are hard but I got to try and clear all the stuff out of my head from everything else I have had to do and just try my best. When work time comes around I get ready and head out the door. I have to clean the movie theater. There are seven theaters, two bathrooms, two hallways and one lobby; the place is pretty big and I do all this by myself. When all this is done I go back home and weather Iââ¬â¢m tired or not I sit down and do more school work. When times are stressful I stop and pull myself together and calm down. When we get stressed out and just want to quit just to let the stress away, but weather you know it or not calming yourself down and working through it to get everything done is very much worth it. The Bebop Revolution free essay sample
Music and Ideas, Jazz Lecturer: Paul O Donned Submission Date: 21-January-2011 Revolution; the forcible overthrow of a government or social order, In favor of a new system. [1] The 1 sass saw one of the greatest musical revolutions of the 20th century, the transition of swing to bebop. Although the exact origins of the name are ambiguous, it is widely accepted that the name bears relation to scat singing, a nonsense syllabic phrase employed by voice improvisations.Originally, the syllables rebel and bebop had appeared many scat singing solos. The style has been named In relation to this tradition due to the similarities In their performance- freedom and opportunities to improvise are common to each. One of the most Influential bebop players, Dizzy Gillespie, noted how audiences would not know the name of the song and instead request bebop, [3] and so the term was coined. Bebop saw the beginning of a new and exciting form of Jazz performance. In Scott Yawns words, the name is really a tribute to the musics rhythmic nature and spontaneity. [2] Swing, possibly one of the all-time most popular genres of North American music, suffered a decline from 1944 onwards. Due to the recording strike by the Musicians union, no new records were created for some labels for a period of almost 2 years. [2] This time saw an increase in singers who, up to this point, rarely the opportunity to contribute In a Big Band environment. Moreover, wartime America had a greater need for soothing and nostalgic ballads. [2] The close of the ass saw the release of the recording Body and Soul [4] by Coleman Hawkins. This piece marked the beginning of the bebop revolution. Unlike the usual conventions of swing, Body and Soul saw the Increase of Improvisation and the use of double time. Despite barely hinted at the melody, Hawkins conveyed avid forms of improvisation. The emphasis on the chord structure rather than the melody leading up to a solo became a hallmark for future bebop pieces to come. [2] Bebop saw the downfall of Swing in many ways. For example, in large big band ensembles, some musicians began to be discontent with the lack of space for soloing.Bebop ensembles employed smaller numbers (usually a quintet) as opposed to big band where ten or more players performed. Unlike swing, where simple 2 or 4 bar phrases of Improvisation was usually the case, bebop utilized uneven numbers of bars and overlapping phrases. The rhythm section also began to receive greater priority, beating out a strong four to the bar pulse. Also, in swing there was commonly no need for a bassist whereas bebop strongly needed a bass. By 1 946, The Big Band tradition was officially dead. Many factors such as competition from other styles (Dixieland, rhythm and blues and taxes and unfortunately, and the certain predictability that had crept into swing. [2] Bebop also differed to straightforward swing in style. Bebops style was more experimental and, in the most positive way possible, unrestrained. Tempos were fast, phrasing asymmetrical, intricate melodies were played and far greater importance was placed on the rhythm section. Swing was generally associated with big band and once, while bebop was all about improvisation and soloing.Bebop performers however usually took the chord progressions of popular swing pieces and improvised over them- showing the close link between the two styles despite the differences. Moreover, bebop players usually incorporated harmonic devices such as substitution, where one replaces a simpler chord with a more complicated one like a flattened ninth, sharpened ninth or the trio-tone. Unfortunately, bebop did not appear to be as popular as swing, despite influencing pop and virtually every style of non-classical music. ] To audiences it sounded too foreign and different, and due to the recording strike, they never had the opportunity to be eased into the style gradually- so it is quite understandable that it came as somewhat of a shock.
